iPhone 12 Review: Design
As Apple rarely makes significant changes to the iPhone’s exterior design from one generation to the next, even minor upgrades are usually well accepted by consumers. The iPhone 12’s design is one example of the subtle changes that have been made compared to prior models.
Certainly, the flat edges look fine and are a welcome departure from the rounder iPhones of recent years. Along with Apple’s new Ceramic Shield material, they make the iPhone 12 more durable, as the rounder frames of earlier iPhones contributed to their fragility.
EverythingApplePro put the Ceramic Shield screen through its paces on YouTube, and it passed with flying colors. When dropped from hip or shoulder height, neither the iPhone 12 nor the iPhone 12 Pro cracked, and even when dropped from 10 feet, just the back of the normal iPhone 12 broke.
Having saying that, I still haven’t gotten used to the sharper design. The iPhone 12 reminds me why rounded corners are the norm for modern devices. The corners irritate your palm and make holding the device awkward.
For instance, the Pixel 5 is 0.31 inches thick, whereas the iPhone 12 is 0.29 inches thick. The Pixel 5, on the other hand, has a slimmer feel in your hand since it conforms to the shape of your palm.
iPhone 12 Design
With the iPhone 12, we’re back to a fully flat front and back, with a flat frame around the sides as well. It resembles the iPhone 5 in certain ways, but its display glass isn’t even beveled or chamfered.
The metal casing of your smartphone will be seen if you select a very light color. That’s great for the front and back panels, but I had a feeling the frame would become dinged up after a week of use even without a case, and sure enough, it did.
While Apple claims its new front-facing Ceramic Shield material is four times more drop-resistant than previous iterations, this does not mean it is scratch-proof.
The IP68 classification means that the device is protected against dust and water, and during the evaluation period, the phone was even submerged for a few minutes while being used to take video.
iPhone 12 Specifications and Software
We’ve had plenty of time to get to know Apple’s A14 Bionic SoC, which powers the brand-new iPad Air and the entire iPhone 12 family (2020). It has a quad-core GPU, the latest generation “Neural Engine” AI logic, and more than two high-performance and four energy-efficient CPU cores.
Apple asserts that this 5nm chip is not only the fastest smartphone processor available, but also extremely efficient in terms of power consumption. The rear of my iPhone 12 warmed up noticeably under usual use. Not a major issue, but apparent nevertheless. The metal frame and back did grow pretty hot while stressing the A14 Bionic SoC in games and benchmarks, which could be unpleasant for some users over longer periods of time.
This could possibly be alleviated by using a case. Apple isn’t exaggerating when it claims top performance, according to benchmarks. The single-core and multi-core scores on Geekbench 5 were 1,563 and 3,675, while AnTuTu recorded a score of 5,68,462.

Conclusion
The entry-level iPhone 12 may be the easiest to overlook of the four new iPhone 12 models. It is not the largest or most advanced in terms of camera system, but it does have the most incremental changes of the new portfolio.
Yet, this is not just an update to the iPhone 11; with its increased base price, Apple is introducing a new product tier.
Like the two sizes of Apple Watch, the distinctions between these versions are more about personal preference than capabilities, so you might look at it as an upgrade from the iPhone 12 small.
